Dermal Fillers

Treatment is very well tolerated and is usually painless however topical anaesthetic creams may be used 30 minutes prior and in some cases a dental block can be used. All the fillers used at the Durham Cosmetic clinic contain local anesthetic within the filler itself.

Dermal fillers are not permanent and will break down over time. All the fillers used at the Durham Cosmetic Clinic are made from hyaluronic acid, a natural component of our body and skin, which breaks down after around 9 to 18 months. We are currently using the Belotero range from Merz but have others available.

Millions of dermal filler treatments have been performed worldwide and are extremely safe and effective when injected properly, resulting in the most natural of differences.

At the Durham Cosmetic Clinic we only use the safest, most effective FDA-approved, naturally biodegradable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers which are designed to mimic the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in our skin. Dr Peter Aspell performs all consultations and treatments himself and will go through all of your questions in your initial 30 minute consult.

Treatment usually takes approximately 30 minutes. There is little or no downtime and you can resume normal activities right away. We do recommend avoiding alcohol on the day of the treatment and suggest avoiding vigorous exercise for the remainder of the day after a treatment to minimise swelling and bruising.

There is no need for allergy testing because the fillers contain hyaluronic acid which naturally occurs in your skin anyway and is used in other medical treatments. If there is a little swelling, you can easily camouflage it with makeup.

Unfortunately, with time, your skin’s ability to manufacture its own hyaluronic acid decreases. When dermal fillers are injected into fine lines, wrinkles, or sunken areas of the face, they replenish the hyaluronic acid that has been absorbed into your body over time, helping you achieve a more youthful appearance.

The benefits of the hydration and increase in the body’s collagen build up actually improves the tissue over time. We inject them through very fine needles and soft cannulas under the skin into specific areas.

Patients usually have minimal to no pain after filler injections.

Common side effects are localised and temporary such mild swelling/brusing, occasional itchiness or tenderness with the swelling. These are usually very well tolerated. Rare risks such as blindness, loss of blood supply to an area of skin and infection associated with the filler product have been reported in literature. These are rare and treatable if managed appropriately.
