Microneedling

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling therapy has been available for many years and a variety of devices have been used to cause micro-injuries to the skin thereby triggering inflammation and stimulating collagen production. Initially there was skin stamping and skin rollering and various take home microneedling kits but at Durham cosmetic clinic Dr Peter Aspell uses the only U.S FDA approved and clinically proven medical device for microneedling - the SkinPen.

Why use Microneedling and the SkinPen?

Microneedling is used for skin rejuvenation, improving skin texture and glow, improve fine lines and wrinkles, reduce scars including new and old acne scarring, improve stretch marks, lid abnormal pigmentation and blemishes and treat alopecia and hair loss/balding. It can be used alone or combined with any other cosmetic treatment offered at Durham health. Most people will opt for 3-4 treatments done 6-12 weeks apart.

Microneedling with SkinPen by Bellus Medical causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimising cellular damage. The result is effective remodelling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact. A topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) is applied first so the treatment is extremely well tolerated and afterwards a soothing and rejuvenating face mask is applied to cool and calm the skin without disrupting the wound healing cascade.

There are three phases to the wound-repair process:

Phase I

Inflammation.

Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.

Phase II

Proliferation.

The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.

Phase III

Remodeling.

The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels. Best of all, SkinPen works. Ninety percent of subjects in the clinical trial by Bellus Medical would recommend the procedure to family and friends

How does it work and what can I expect?

As the SkinPen passes over your skin, it creates thousands of pin point punctures in the dermis. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that initiate the production of collagen and elastin. The human body is designed to react to any damage or injury by initiating the process of healing.

The skin is cleaned and numbing cream may be applied to lessen any discomfort. A small handheld pen like device with a sterile, disposable tip with 12 tiny needles is then used to pierce the skin. Our needling pen’s multi-speed and adjustable needle depth allow needles to pierce the skin’s layer at 90 degrees and increase the absorption of products. After the treatment, soothing Vitamin-C serum or Hyaluronic acid are used to hydrate, heal and protect the skin.

What is the recovery process?

The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkish that may last for 12 to 48 hours. In order to reduce visible redness, we recommend hyaluronic acid after the procedure, and to protect the skin with zinc based sunblock. Mineral makeup may be used after the procedure.
